Medical Coverage, for you and your family

At NHRMC, health is our business! We recognize that our employees have many different needs when it comes to health care. We are committed to providing you with exceptional medical coverage through a variety of plans, tailored to your individual needs.

At NHRMC we are committed to providing employees with exceptional medical benefits and offer a choice of two medical plans, the NHRMC Medical Plan and the Standard Medical Plan.

Roughly 98% of our employees and their families enroll in the NHRMC Plan as it is a cost-conscious, quality, and care driven option. The plan design steers medical care to a NHRMC facility for Inpatient, Outpatient, major diagnostic and rehabilitation services. This plan offers no UHC out-of-network benefits.

Full-time Employees in the NHRMC Plan pay $15.45 each pay period or $401.70 annually for employee only coverage with $500 deductible, $3,500 Out-of-Pocket max, $15 NHMRC PCP co-pay and $40 NHRMC Specialist Co-pay – ensuring this medical plan provides quality care and can be afforded by all employees. (See attached 2021 Medical Plan Rates and NHRMC Benefit Chart for more details).

Additionally, the Healthy Lifestyle Plan is available to cover members who have diabetes or high blood pressure and provides free nutritional and prescription counseling, $0 co-pay for scripts within the HLP formulary and $0 co-pay physician visits for appointments related to their diabetes and/or hypertension.

Employee Health & Clinic

NHRMC staff can receive care for routine illness or injury on site, at low or no cost. Convenience and affordable care, bundled together.

NHRMC’s Employee Health and Clinic is responsible for ensuring that all New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Affiliate’s staff are protected from occupational hazards by providing vaccinations, treatments, testing and education to protect from specific diseases and administration of the seasonal flu campaign.

The Clinic provides acute care services to its employees at a cost of $10 per visit through payroll deduction. In addition, the Clinic provides initial treatment and follow-up services for all work related, Workers’ Compensation injuries/illnesses.

Employee Health and Clinic is located on NHRMC’s main 17th Street campus and current hours of operation are 7:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday. All employees are eligible as of their date of hire.

An Employee Health Nurse is on call for all non-business hours to provide emergency services when necessary. Telemedicine visits have been encouraged during the Covid-19 pandemic at no cost. Clinic visits average 370 per month.

Employee Pharmacy

Employees and their covered family members have access to dedicated pharmacy services including medication counseling, special education and a health management plan for individuals with diabetes and high blood pressure.

The Employee Pharmacy opened in November 2019 and partners with Employee Fitness and Nutrition Services. They provide medication counseling and care exclusively to our employees and their covered family members with special education and one on one sessions with Healthy Lifestyles Plan members, a health management plan for individuals with diabetes and high blood pressure.

Flexible Spending Accounts

Save money using your pre-tax dollars for medical expenses not covered by insurance! We offer a variety of FSA options to help save money for you and your family.

Employees may contribute up to the 2021 annual limit of $2,750 in the HealthCare Flexible Spending Account to pay for out-of-pocket medical expenses for themselves, their spouse and any dependents claimed for income tax purposes. Employees need not be enrolled in a NHRMC health plan, or have their dependents enrolled in a NHRMC health plan, to use the flexible spending account.

Likewise, employees may set aside up to 2021 annual limit of $5,000 in the Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account to pay for childcare (under the age of 13) or the care of an incapacitated spouse or other dependent. The expenses must be necessary for the employee to work and their spouse to work, find work, or attend college.

We know that dental care is essential to good health. Our dental benefits include preventative, basic, and major services. Chew on that.

  • One routine eye exam per calendar year - $10 co-pay
  • One standard contact lens fitting per calendar year - $10 co-pay
  • $150 eyewear allowance per calendar year (note: unused money does not roll over)

Life Insurance and Long Term Disability

If something happens to you, we want to be sure your family has the financial resources they need. We help provide peace of mind despite hoping you’ll never need it.

Life Insurance:
NHRMC offers $10,000 in Basic Life and AD&D insurance at no cost for employees.

Additionally, voluntary supplemental life coverage is available to all employees.

Coverage of one to five times base salary may be purchased not to exceed a combined total (with employer-paid life insurance coverage) of $1.2M or $1.8M for executive leadership.

Spousal life is offered in $10,000 increments from $10,000 to $50,000 and dependents at $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000. Dependents include your spouse and dependent children up to age 19 or age 25 for full-time students.

Optional Dependent Life is available for eligible dependents, including a legally married spouse and dependent children up to age 19 (up to age 25 if they are full-time students). The insurance is offered at $5,000, $10,000 and $15,000 increments.

Disability Coverage:
NHRMC provides basic Long-Term Disability insurance through Sun Life Financial at no cost to full time employees (0.8 FTE and greater). Long term disability insurance provides 60% replacement of base salary (not to exceed $20,000 per month) beginning on the 91st day of an approved disability.

Employees have the option of purchasing the 60-day policy that shortens the waiting period for replacement salary to 60 days. Executives and NHRMC physicians receive full-income replacement during the disability waiting period.

Retirement Packages

403(b) plan:

Under this program, employees may elect to have a percentage or flat amount of your annual salary deposited into your account each pay period on a pre-tax basis. Contributions are not taxed on the money until it’s withdrawn, presumably at retirement when individuals may be in a lower tax bracket.

AIG Retirement Services is the sole retirement provider for the 403(b) and has four (4) dedicated representatives available to help employees with their financial planning, retirement education and needs.

Retirement – NHRMC, CHA & Physician Group Employees:

Employees are eligible to receive an employer match of up to 6% of their 403(b) employee contributions, dollar for dollar, after completion of one year of service.

Employees are vested in the employer match once they have completed three calendar years of service with 1,000 hours worked in each year.

Retirement – Pender Memorial Hospital & NHRMC Homecare Employees:

Pender Memorial Hospital and NHRMC Home Care provides a pension plan for employees. Plan participation begins on January 1, after having worked a minimum of 1,000 hours the prior calendar year. Participants are 100% vested in an accrued pension benefit once they’ve completed five years of service in which they work 1,000 hours each calendar year.

Pension benefits are calculated using a formula based on several factors including credited years of vested service with NHRMC, final average compensation and age when benefits commence.

Normal retirement age is 65. However, vested retirees may choose to begin receiving their pension benefit anytime at or after age 55. If payment begins before normal retirement age of 65, the pension benefit is adjusted to reflect receipt of monies over a longer period.

Generous Time Off Packages

NHRMC’s robust Paid Days Off policy allows you the flexibility you need to balance your work, your life, your schedule, your needs.

Benefit eligible employees whose FTE status is at least 0.4 FTE and are paid at least 32 hours per pay period, begin earning PDOs as of their date of hire and may begin to use PDOs after they have satisfactorily completed their introductory period of employment.

The annual Paid Days Off allowance will accrue on per pay period basis on hours paid, up to a maximum of 80 hours paid per pay period, and years of service in accordance with the following schedule:

Other Medical Leave:

NHRMC manages all Leave of Absences internally by the HR Benefits team. Employees who need a medical leave due to their own illness and / or injury, but who do not meet the eligibility requirements for FMLA, are able to maintain their health benefits for a period of 12-weeks at the regular employee contribution rate.

Employee Fitness Center

Strong of body! The Jack Barto Center is one of NHRMC’s most popular benefits. Available to you and your family, for wellness, fitness and fun! We even offer virtual workouts for your convenience.

The Jack Barto Center for Employee Fitness, a 28,000-square foot facility, is open 24/7 and demonstrates a strong commitment to our mantra of No Barriers, No Excuses.

The Employee Fitness Services include weight loss challenges, 12toLife intro to fitness programs, obstacle course training and kids’ programs, over 70 free indoor and outdoor classes weekly, drop-in child care, massage therapy, and personal and group training.

Membership costs $130.00 per year for employees or $260.00 per year for family coverage. In 2020 and prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the employee fitness center averaged 800 visits each day.

Employee Assistance Programs

Strong of mind! Confidential, personal counseling and other assistance services, available to you and your family members.

Because mental well-being is as important as physical well-being, NHRMC contracts with an EAP provider.

LifeServices EAP offers confidential, personal counseling and other enhanced employee assistance services. Eligible family members can receive up to five counseling sessions per person, per issue, per calendar year at no cost. In addition to face-to-face sessions with a local, licensed counselor.

LifeServices provides on-site appointments at the main 17th campus and Orthopedic Hospital one day each week, wellness and work life seminars, and resources.

Tuition Assistance

Our dedication and commitment to education includes a tuition assistance program for fields of study related to your position.

NHRMC supports employees through tuition assistance. Employees (> 0.5 FTE) are eligible to receive up to $2,000 per calendar year for a course or course of study at an accredited university or college that leads to licensure and/or degree that will help them in their current position or another position within the organization.

Tuition assistance is available at registration versus as a reimbursement, to ensure finances aren’t a barrier to pursuing educational opportunities.

College Savings Program

NHRMC participates in the NC National College Savings Program so you can save for college for your child, yourself or anyone else you wish to assist with pre-tax dollars.

NHRMC has a group enrollment plan with the NC National College Savings Program so you can save for college with paycheck deductions. You can save for your child, yourself or anyone else you wish to assist with college.

Just decide how much you wish to contribute in your bi-weekly paycheck. Your invested money will pay for tuition, fees, room & board, and books at any college anywhere in the country.

Funds are invested in a range of strategies from conservative to aggressive. You choose the combination that meets your own investment objectives.

NHRMC has exclusive arrangements with the Children’s Learning Center and Kiddie Academy to provide child care services for your children aged 6-weeks to 5-years. You will receive a reimbursement for a portion of the costs.

Here are some highlights:

  • Five-star child care facility
  • Accepts children from six weeks to 5 years old
  • Offers after-school care, including care during school system holidays and closings
  • Extended hours: 6:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday through Friday
  • Located at 735 Medical Center Drive

Active, benefit eligible employees .4 FTE or greater shall receive a reimbursement in their first paycheck of the month for the previous month’s enrollment and paid tuition equal to the following:


When both spouses are employed at NHRMC, the combined reimbursement shall not exceed the maximum of $200/child.

Employees with more than one (1) child attending the Children’s Learning Center are eligible to receive one (1) additional reimbursement equal to the amount in the chart above per child based on FTE status. The maximum reimbursement is $300.

NHRMC supports your desire to grow your family. We offer financial support to help those of you who are pursuing adoption. We’re here for you, and your expanding family.

NHRMC is committed to enriching the lives of our employees through competitive and supportive programs. We want employees to achieve both career and personal goals. In support of this commitment, NHRMC has established the Adoption Assistance benefit to make benefits equitable for adoptive and biological parents.

Benefit eligible employees (0.4 FTE or greater) who adopt are eligible for financial assistance for expenses related to legally adopt a child under the age of 18 in an amount not to exceed $3,000.

Nutrition Support & Counseling

NHRMC provides you with numerous tools and resources for eating healthy and maintaining a nutritious, well-balanced diet. From recipes to nutritional counseling to live & virtual healthy cooking classes. We even have a small appliance lending library. At NHRMC, we help you eat smart.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center recognizes that a healthy outside starts from the inside. NHRMC provides its employees with many tools and resources for eating healthy and maintaining a nutritious, well-balanced diet. These nutritional services are part of the greater Good For You Wellness Benefits initiative that focuses on giving all NHRMC employees guidance and motivation toward healthier lifestyles.

The employee fitness center is also the primary location of Employee Nutrition Services (ENS) including a teaching kitchen. Our dedicated team of Nutritionists, RDs and our Wellness Chef offer one on one counseling at no cost, provide free classes on a menagerie of topics, as well as host a small appliance lending library, and offer support while participating in fitness programs.

NHRMC employees can receive free consultation and guidance from a wellness dietitian and can enjoy many healthy cooking classes. Our wellness dietitians are available for special nutritional counseling in a one-on-one setting or in groups. To schedule an appointment, call 910.667.4013.

Tuesday: 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the fitness center

Community Garden & Farmers’ Markets

Exercise your green thumb! A 24-bed garden is available for our staff. There are farm to table classes in the garden and a monthly farmers’ market.

Employee Nutrition Services (ENS) also takes the remote teaching carts to departments and facilities throughout the system for hands-on demonstrations and mini-classes, coordinates monthly Farmers’ Markets from Sep – Apr and maintains (with lots of employee volunteers and support from CF Heart) a 24-bed Community Garden located near our SECU House and Cape Fear Heart. A highlight of the remote nutrition is farm to table classes at the garden.

Covid-19 provided the opportunity to develop a complete line of virtual and stagnant workouts, tips (we call them cookies), and cooking classes through social media. The views, shares, likes and comments have affirmed that we are supporting NHRMC’s mission of Leading Our Community to Outstanding Health. We will continue to offer and build this into our model.

Employee Fitness and Nutrition Services has partnered with local company Green, Lean and Clean (GLC) to provide healthy, affordable and fresh meals that are ready to serve in three minutes – promoting work / life balance and wellness. GLC is available at all NHRMC cafeterias and the EFC, as well as for delivery at over 13 other office sites.

LegalShield is a comprehensive group legal plan that covers the employee and their eligible dependents. Services include unlimited phone consultations, phone calls and letters on your behalf, contract and document review, mortgage document assistance, uncontested separation and divorce, uncontested name change, trial defense services, IRS audit legal services, in-office consultation, preferred member discount, wills (including living will and health care power of attorney) and coverage for moving traffic violations (including teenage drivers.)

Identity Theft Plan
