What You'll Do

Summary:

The Unit Manager works under the supervision of the service line Director. The Unit Manager has 24-hour accountability for unit operations and works collaboratively with the Nurse Manager to ensure staff maintains current clinical skills to support the delivery of care.The Unit Manager is accountable for staffing, scheduling, managing unit operations, fiscal management and human resource management. The Unit Manager will provide input into strategic planning and budget development. The Unit Manager is accountable for customer service excellence. In collaboration with the Nurse Manager and based on best practices and research, the Unit Manager is responsible for patient outcomes.   


Responsibilities:

1.Responsible for the daily operations, ensuring that policies, practices, procedures and standards of performance are followed.

2.Develops departmental staffing schedules to provide staffing to meet patient care requirements and operational requirements.

3.In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, responsible for staff education including clinical competence, compliance and organizational initiatives.

4.Serves as spokesperson and point of contact on issues affecting the care of the surgical patients as appropriate. Interacts with patients and families to ensure we are meeting expectations.

5.Works collaboratively with the Nurse Manager / Administrative Coordinator to facilitate patient care conferences and participates in discharge planning. Completes daily rounds with staff and patients and rounds regularly with physicians. Daily responsibility for throughput and ensuring the appropriate placement of patients.

6.Develops staff using coaching for success principles, annual performance assessments, staff education assessments and quarterly high-medium-low discussions. Facilitates staff attendance for continuing education. Unit Manager will be responsible for all staff performance appraisal interviews with goal setting during annual performance appraisal and a review of goals at mid-year.

7.Assesses external and internal customer satisfaction through daily rounding, visibility within the unit and utilizing patient / family satisfaction, employee satisfaction and physician satisfaction reports as a measurement.

8.Supports shared-governance principles, participates on unit governance councils and supports staff attendance at shared governance councils including Nursing Congress.

9.Implements the principles of coaching for success, provides staff recognition and creates an environment to retain and facilitate staff development.

10.Maintains current knowledge of management theories and annually attends leadership education classes.

11.Communicates and shares information with staff through monthly staff meetings, daily rounding and other communication mediums.

12.Develops and continually ensures that a planned, systematic and on-going process for monitoring, evaluating and improving departmental operations is addressed with proper communication and documentation.

13.Accountable for patient, process and operational outcomes.

14.Assists in the allocation and distribution of resources based upon patient need and volume.

15.Collaborates with Human Resources in developing strategies that promote retention and recognition.

Other information:

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, BSN or other related field preferred or Undergraduate and / or Graduate degree in business or other related business degree.

Licensure/Certifications: If RN applicant, current license to practice professional nursing in the State of North Carolina and BCLS required. If Business applicant, no licensure required.

Experience: Minimum of two years of leadership experience.

Exposure to Hazards: Frequent exposure to blood and body fluids, infectious diseases, needle puncture wound; occasional exposure to radiation in certain areas.

Other - Hours of Work: Flexible schedule to accommodate staffing and/or departmental needs which may include weekends/holidays rotating shifts and on-call.

Demonstrates standards of performance (ownership, teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence. 

Performs other duties as assigned. 

Individual will possess commensurate combination of education, experience and qualifications.
