What You'll Do

Summary:

The Laboratory Manager has 24-hour accountability and responsibility for laboratory operations in the Anatomic Pathology and Flow Cytometry laboratories across the network.The manager is responsible for planning, standardizing, staffing, scheduling, budgeting, coordination, and human resource activities.The manager assures quality of laboratory testing, ensures the education and development of staff and students assists technical staff as a technical resource.

The Anatomic Pathology manager has control over all human, financial, and informational resources allotted to the cost center, consults with the pathologists and the medical director for advice and input.Working with the Administrative Director of Lab Services and other managers, implements the strategic initiatives authorized by the COO.The autonomy of the manager is provided and ensured by the Administrative Director of Lab Services.

The manager assures that standards of the CAP, JCAHO, and AABB are met, as applicable. The manager is also responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance including CLIA and Medicare Billing.

The manager of Anatomic Pathology has 28 direct reports including the Histology Coordinator, Support Associates, Technical Assistant, Histotechnicians, Histotechnologists, Cytotechnologists, Resource Technologists, Medical Technologists and Transcriptionists. 


Responsibilities:

1. Plan and coordinate the administrative and technical functions of Anatomic Pathology, including histology, cytopathology, flow cytometry and autopsy services; execute strategy of the above services; focuses on maintaining stability in the operations of the area. 2. Participate in the formulation, revision and advancement of strategic and short-range plans within anatomic pathology; participate in other hospital and network planning activities as requested; champions interfunctional collaboration across work areas and departments. 3. Control expenditures within department-wide budgeted amounts; responsible for inventory management of supplies; evaluate and make recommendations for the purchase of new equipment. 4. Ensure compliance of all departmental, hospital-wide, local, state and federal policies/requirements; monitor compliance with safety requirements and regulations and applies appropriate orientation, coaching and sanctions as needed. Assures promotion of an adherence to all procedures and policies developed to achieve and maintain compliance with all applicable laws governing federally funded health care programs, (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid and Champus). 5. Facilitate maximum efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of quality laboratory testing through daily, active review of test results. 6. Monitor all laboratory functions to improve effectiveness and efficiency of anatomic pathology services using main principles and practices of performance improvement; participates in determining appropriateness of planned performance improvement. 7. Monitor staffing levels to ensure staffing is consistent with demand. Ensures compliance with New Hanover Health Network philosophy. Initiates requests for staffing revisions. 8. Monitor productivity of staff individually and as a whole to ensure staff is utilized appropriately. 9. Monitor and evaluate the laboratory computer system as it relates to anatomic pathology services to determine usefulness and effectiveness. 10. Ensure performance appraisals are completed on a timely basis; ensure job descriptions are current and meet professional/legal requirements; responsible for all hires/fires/disciplines. 11. Commit to and participate in continuous professional and managerial development activities and provides for professional development of staff. 12. Participate in planning and implementing recruitment and retention activities; monitor staff turnover to determine cause and effect. 13. Provide continuing education for employees within the laboratory.

Other information:

1. Education: BS in Histo Technology or Science required. Preferably a Master’s Degree in science or Business/ Management or postgraduate studies in management. 2. Licensure / Certifications: HT(ASCP) or Equivalent required. Specialty Certification Preferred. 3. Experience: 8 years of laboratory experience including at least 3 years in a management or supervisory position. There should be a record of demonstrated successful performance with progressive increase in the level of responsibilities.
Demonstrates standards of performance (ownership, teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence.
Performs other duties as assigned.
