What You'll Do

Summary:

The Cardiovascular Performance Improvement (PI) Coordinator promotes optimal care in clinical activities, professional and public education, research activities, and quality assurance activities. This individual is a Registered Nurse working under the supervision of the Administrator of Cardiac Services and in collaboration with the Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery Medical Directors to achieve improvements in patient outcomes, operational performance, and reduce variations in cardiovascular care. This role incorporates expertise in clinical practice, data analysis, research, and performance improvement methodologies in order to achieve measurable improvements in the 5 pillars, with emphasis on quality and successful cardiac services site surveys. The Cardiovascular PI Coordinator evaluates the day-to-day clinical care of the cardiovascular patient and serves as primary contact between cardiac surgeons/cardiologists as well as other clinical areas throughout New Hanover Regional Medical Center. This person is responsible for the coordination and presentation of Cardiovascular Services data at the Department of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery meetings. The Cardiovascular PI Coordinator is self-directed and acts as an effective leader, resource, champion for change, and role model for quality cardiovascular care. 


Responsibilities:

1.Collaborates on the design, implements, and evaluates the Cardiovascular Services performance improvement program.

2.Effectively facilitates clinical outcome initiatives in collaboration with medical staff, service lines, and other hospital quality departments to improve cardiovascular patient outcomes and utilization of appropriate resources.

3.Advocates for Cardiovascular PI initiatives related to hospital wide core teams.

4.Provides and maintains benchmarking information, both internal and external to the organization.

5.Provides case review of patient care following guidelines for referral through the professional peer review process. Collaborates with the Medical Directors in preparing multidisciplinary Cardiovascular Peer Review and Morbidity/Mortality Conferences.

6.Facilitates and/or chairs meetings and teams related to Cardiovascular performance improvement. Organizes and prepares cardiovascular debriefings with appropriate attention to detail as needed.

7.Uses cardiac registry databases, identifies opportunities for improved outcomes, reduced cost and hospital length of stay, and best practice utilization of appropriate resources.

8.Analyzes and interprets cardiovascular data; provides expertise, interpretation, and trending of data in relationship to the clinical outcomes, compliance with regulatory standards, DNV and other best practice standards.

9.Manages the aggregation and presentation of data and performance improvement information to the Department of Cardiovascular Services Peer Review, and ensures timely follow-up and loop closure of issues.  Documentation is timely, accurate and thorough.

10.Initiates concurrent performance improvement by participating in multidisciplinary cardiac and cardiac surgery rounds.

11.Participates in development of cardiovascular order sets, pathways and protocols which are compliant with state and DNV requirements.

12.Interfaces with Cardiovascular Services staff and communicates metrics to be monitored and trended as part of the performance improvement process.

13.Participates in preparatory activities necessary to facilitate successful accreditation visits.

14.Serves as a liaison between Cardiovascular and other clinical services that support cardiovascular care: pre-hospital, emergency department, radiology, surgical services, critical care, acute care and ICUs, rehabilitation, case management, and other therapies.

15.Analyzes complex data and presents with a professional appearance and a high degree of accuracy.

16.Demonstrates proficiency in various software packages including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access to prepare graphs, flow charts, data presentation, etc.

17.Possesses critical thinking, analytical, teaching/coaching and research skills.

18.Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.

19.Facilitates and/or participates on performance improvement teams.

20.Organizes and performs work effectively and efficiently.

21.Maintains and adjusts schedule to enhance team performance.

Other information:

Education: Master’s Degree in Nursing or another health-related field required.

Licensure / Certifications: Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in State of North Carolina. Strongly encourage attaining Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ).

Experience: Minimum of 5 years clinical experience required including leadership and management. 

Demonstrates standards of performance (ownership, teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence. 

Performs other duties as assigned. 

Individual will possess commensurate combination of education, experience and qualifications.
