What You'll Do

Summary:
The Community-Based Doula is a trusted member of the community he/she/they serve who provides peer support to women and families throughout pregnancy, during birth, and in the postpartum stage. They will collaborate with community stakeholders/institutions and use a diverse team approach to: 1)provide continuous labor support to at least 2 clients per month 2) build relationships and understand each client individually to provide support relative to preferred birth experience and needs; 3) conduct home visits in the pre- and postnatal period to support mothers, provide newborn care, provide breastfeeding support, and make suggestions based on evidence-based practices that may lead to early detection of complications and initiation of appropriate referrals.

Responsibilities:
1. Must have the ability to be on call 24/7 for assigned doula clients
2. Provides support in terms of motivation, encouragement, and barrier management skills to mothers and families to educate on self-management approaches to health
3. Build relationships and maintain effective communication with mothers and organization stakeholders
4. Maintain and prepare accurate and proper document logs of encounters, program details, feedback, and evaluations indicating outcomes
5. Will provide back-up coverage to second doula contracted or hired with the program to ensure that all clients have continuous labor support
6. Collects data including but no limited to the number of women served, demographic information, number of visits completed by type, number of children born by gender, birth weight, breastfeeding initiation and feedback received from completed satisfaction surveys
7. Provides continuous labor support to at least 2 clients per month
8. Facilitate a collaborative partnership with the local birthing facility(ies) by inviting labor and delivery staff to participate in a continuing education workshop for entitled “The Art and Science of Labor Support: Using Evidence Based Care for Optimal Outcomes”
9. Initiate and maintain contact with clients as follows: at least 3 visits during pregnancy; within 2 days after birth; and within 6 weeks after birth
10. Recommend quality improvement tactics related to program effectiveness
11. Must have the ability to provide information, education, and resources that will prepare the parent and their family for the birth process during prenatal contacts
12. Elevates any clinical concerns, questions, or complications to clinical supervisor immediately
13. Demonstrate and advocate for diversity and inclusion at all levels
14. Clerical duties related to document preparation, electronic communication and filing
15. Maintains a working environment that promotes a professional image of the department throughout the Medical Center
16. Ensures the protection of patient privacy in compliance with HIPAA laws by adhering to all information security and patient privacy regulations

Performs other duties as assigned.
Individual will possess commensurate combination of education, experience and qualifications.

Experience: Must enroll and attend 20-hour Lamaze Childbirth Educator training and a 16-hour birth doula training upon hire; unless already certified by an accredited organization. Must complete training on health equity, trauma-informed care. Must be licenses to drive in the State of North Carolina and have dependable transportation.

Demonstrates standards of performance (ownership, teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence. 

Performs other duties as assigned.
