What You'll Do

Summary:
The Staff Nurse works as Lactation Consultant under the direction of the Director, Manager or Designated Leader. Is a Registered Nurse and Functions under the ANA Standards of Performance and adheres to the guidelines of the NCBON. The Lactation consultant RN has responsibility and accountability for the provision of patient care and is expected to be the clinical expert providing clinical support regarding Lactation. The Lactation Consultant RN communicates and coordinates the patient’s care in an interdisciplinary model. The Lactation Consultant RN manages and delivers patient care utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to assist the breastfeeding mother. The Lactation Consultant RN applies critical thinking skills to resolve problems. The Lactation Consultant RN functions as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team as a consultant, educator, and mentor to nurses, healthcare professionals, and patients consistently demonstrating behaviors that model New Hanover Regional Medical Centers core values and mission statement. Responsibilities:
1. Performs nursing assessments to gather data and identify the patient’s needs for this episode of care per ANA standards and NCBON
2. Develops and implements standards of care and guidelines to assist breastfeeding mothers in all areas of the organization actively promoting breastfeeding and assist mothers in reaching their breastfeeding goals
3. Collaborates with physicians and other health team members in coordinating the plan of care and facilitating patient outcomes.
4. Assesses and reassesses breastfeeding effectiveness of Mother/Baby dyads in all departments while valuing Family Centered Care concepts and reflecting them in interaction with others.
a. Documents effectively and in a timely manner assessments, delivery of care and patient’s response to care in the medical record, allowing for continuity of care with co-workers.
b. Functions effectively with fluctuating patient census, can prioritize and manage day to day work.
c. Provides a breastfeeding plan for discharge.
5. Using extensive breastfeeding knowledge; advises and develops plan of care regarding management of breastfeeding problems.
a. Identifies common breastfeeding problems and suggests appropriate interventions or referral (phone calls and outpatient consultation). Makes appropriate decisions regarding various breastfeeding devices as needed.
b. Consults independently in inpatient setting, providing appropriate assessment, and intervention and follow up plan.
6. Demonstrates critical thinking skills for problem solving and anticipating patient care needs.
7. Plans, oversees and coordinates patient, family and staff breastfeeding education activities.
a. Provides and coordinates didactic education to all patients who require breastfeeding information in accordance with current research literature and national standards of care.
b. Develops or obtains suitable educational materials to facilitate patient understanding of content.
c. Knowledgeable and skilled in the physiology and clinical management of breastfeeding.
d. Assess patient and family emotional, cognitive, social and motivational status relative to learning and determines their education needs and priorities.
e. Documents patient/family education and progress of the mother and baby in accordance with hospital standards.
8. Expands and maintains knowledge of field and skills through continuous study and research.
a. Maintains competency in the field by attending professional conferences and continuing education courses related to field.
b. Keeps up to date through the use of professional materials, videos, newsletters, and journals.
c. Participates in performance improvement initiatives to improve processes and outcomes
9. Serves as a clinical resource to professionals both within the system and in the region.
a. Problem solves effectively with staff dealing with day to day common patient care issues.
b. Contributes to facilitating staff competency related to breastfeeding.
10. Serves as clinical preceptor to RN’s and Lactation Consultant RNs in training
11. Serves as a clinical resource to Volunteer Peer Counselors
a. Assess Peer Counselors ability to provide non-biased, evidenced based education to breastfeeding families
b. Support Peer Counselors in clinical setting as needed.

Other information:
Experience: Minimal 2 years’ experience in Maternal/Child nursing role including breastfeeding support required; 3-5 years in Maternal/Child nursing role including breastfeeding support or experience working as a Lactation Consultant preferred Demonstrates standards of performance (ownership, teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Individual will possess commensurate combination of education, experience and qualifications.
