The Sitter Monitor Technician provides virtual observation of selected patients for the purpose of identifying behaviors which are potentially hazardous to self or others in accordance with facility policies and procedures and reports needs and concerns to the licensed nurse. Works under the supervision of the nurse manager and under the direct supervision of the registered nurse to observe patients for harmful and/or dangerous behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned. This position has access to and knowledge of extremely sensitive, private and confidential materials. Ability to maintain the highest standard is required with zero tolerance. All the primary duties within this document will be performed according to established policies, procedures and guidelines within the department and Novant Health.

 

Responsibilities:

Process: Provides virtual observation of identified at-risk patients under the supervision of a registered nurse with the purpose of keeping the patient safe. Provides verbal redirection to patients as needed. Documents in the electronic health record per policy, procedure, guidelines. Completes all required paperwork according to departmental guidelines. Manages time and resources. May be asked to carry a pager or cell phone to maintain contact at all times and responds to calls or pages in a timely manner • Safety Measures: Maintains clean and clutter-free environment within assigned areas. Notifies appropriate staff of changes in patient’s condition or behavior, results of treatments, accidents, incidents, and errors. Actively observes and maintains an uninterrupted line of sight with the patients at all times. Maintains patient safety at all times. Professional Accountability: Maintains annual competency, according to department policies, procedures and protocols, as appropriate for the diversity of patients served including different age groups, cultures and educational levels. Demonstrates consistent behavior in support of the Novant Health mission, vision and values in dealing with families, peers, colleagues and the public. Performs duties according to the facility policies and procedures. Appropriately communicates information in accordance with policies and procedures. Continues personal development to enhance personal growth on an annual basis. Maintains work area and adequate supplies. • Teamwork: Develops and maintains positive relationships with team members and internal customers. Consistently demonstrates a willingness to adjust activities to accommodate the needs of team members and internal customers. Resolves conflicts independently, as appropriate. Accepts responsibility for actions and responds positively upon feedback from others. Responsible for 24-hour coverage for department based on autonomous staffing and scheduling guidelines by maintaining and adjusting schedules to enhance team performance. Models and reinforces service and operational excellence at all times. • Customer Satisfaction: Exhibits characteristics of compassion, treats patients, families and internal customers with kindness, patience, empathy and respect.

Essential:
* General Education Degree

Other information:

Education: High School or GED required.  Two years of an undergraduate or graduate Psychology, Social Work or Human Services if NOT Nurse Aide certified.

Experience:  Minimum of one year in an acute hospital setting required.  Minimum of one year as a Nurse Aide, Psychiatric Tech or other nursing support role required.

Licensure/Certification:   De-escalation class within 90 days of hire required.

Additional Skills/Requirements (required):  Ability to successfully complete generic and department-specific skills validation and competency testing as applicable. Maintains acceptable standards set by those guidelines. Must have advanced computer and Windows experience. Must demonstrate appropriate communication skills and sensitivity to patient’s needs. Must be able to assess and interpret data about the patient’s status and identify behavioral needs to be reported to the nurse
