Summary:

The role of the Chaplain exists to enhance the quality of life of patients and their caregivers through the provision of services which meet their unique spiritual, emotional and social needs. 

 

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions • Provide spiritual care to patients and families across the continuum of care: Respond to referrals received from any area, inpatient or outpatient. Collaborate with other spiritual care providers to meet inpatient needs. Utilize appropriate spiritual assessment tools to develop care plans for specific patient needs. Offer prayer, sacraments, and rituals as appropriate and requested. Provide supportive counseling in person and/or on phone/video platform as needed. • Document actions appropriately via patient electronic medical record and other agreed upon tools. • Provide emotional and spiritual support related to end-of-life issues: Facilitate completion of Advance Directives for patients as appropriate. Support patients/families through period of anticipatory grief with referral for Grief Counseling when needed. Upon request, assist patients/families with planning of funeral arrangements. At the discretion of the chaplain, conduct funerals/memorial services. • Serve as psychosocial care representative on appropriate teams and committees: Provide consultation to staff regarding challenging spiritual/emotional issues presented by patients/families/team members. • Provide spiritual/emotional support to staff: Offer spiritual care to staff in personal and/or professional crisis situations, ie: Code Lavender and CISM debriefings. Develop, lead, and coordinate programs which support staff self-care (retreats, special services, conferences). Assist staff day-to-day with reflecting on the impact of their professional role on their personal being and level of burn out. Provide staff programs to enhance knowledge and awareness of spiritual/psychosocial issues. • Represent Novant Health in the community: Participate, when able, in opening/closing and survivor ceremonies held at local activities raising funds. Speak to local groups upon request. Educate local clergy regarding the spiritual care issues facing patients and their families. Join other spiritual care providers in care of larger hospital community during significant events. • Participate in hospital-wide initiatives: ie: Choices and Champions activities, site leadership events, interdisciplinary rounds, leader rounding. 

Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate Degree required. Master's of Divinity or graduate theological degree ordination or equivalent and endorsement by denominations or faith groups endorsing body. Completion of four units of CPE from a nationally accredited body.
  • Experience: Minimum of two years Spiritual Care experience in a healthcare setting preferred. Roles requiring communication across disciplines preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy NH-HR-3096. 
  • Licensure/Certification: Eligible for certification by APC, CPSP, or other equivalent national certifying body required. Board certification completed within 3 years of hire date required .
