What You'll Do


The Phlebotomy Technician I works under the supervision of the Employee Health Staff Nurse. Scope of patient care range are Adult (18-72 years) and Geriatric (72+ years). The Phlebotomy Technician I is responsible for invasive procedures and techniques involved in the collection of blood specimens from patients for laboratory use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The Phlebotomy Technician I is responsible for specimen receipt and processing in Employee Health and sends specimens to the Laboratory. The Phlebotomy Technician I serves as the primary link for the Employee Health and interacts with physicians, guests, patients, family members, and other Medical Center staff to obtain or clarify information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears and elicit cooperation during specimen collection. The PB I must have excellent prioritization skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks. Must have skills to assist in teaching, assessing and training of staff and students.


1. Prepares the patient in a developmentally appropriate manner. Properly identifies the patient, utilizes written procedures for the insurance of positive patient identification. 2. Receives, interprets, and processes provider orders, requisitions, patient information and specimens. Performs computer duties related to specimen collection, specimen receipt, processing and patient care. 3. Records appropriate collection and other information related to specimen collection. . 4. Prepares, processes, labels, transports, and receives patient specimens and samples according to procedure. 5. Accesses patient information in computer system. Performs functions related to receiving specimens and releasing laboratory results to authorized individuals. Maintains patient confidentiality and patient privacy related to HIPPA. 6. Performs a variety of invasive blood collection procedures. Works with biohazard specimens, contaminated sharps, blood collection and other medical equipment. Must be familiar with and use standard precautions. 7. Maintains equipment, supplies, and work area. Assist in ensuring a clean and safe environment and work area, which is functional as well as professional in appearance, safe for patient care, the public and staff. Maintains compliance with standards set by the medical center and all regulatory / accrediting agencies. 8. Admit/register/pre-register patients, correcting as necessary all patient demographic and financial data. 9. Clean, neat, and professional in appearance at all times. 10. Participates in education programs to ensure the highest degree of competency within the established scope of patient care. Participates in laboratory and medical center performance improvement and quality assurance programs and initiatives. 11. Demonstrates strong interpersonal and customer service skills while performing duties. Must have strong customer service skills related to answering telephone and interacting with a diverse customer base.

Other information:

1. Education: High School Graduate or equivalent required. Some post high school education preferred. 2. Licensure / Certifications: NA but must be certification eligible. 3. Experience: One year Phlebotomy or venous access experience or completion of an Accredited Phlebotomy Program is required. Experience related to customer service and quality patient care preferred. Demonstrates standards of performance (ownership, teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence. Performs other duties as assigned. Individual will possess commensurate combination of education, experience and qualifications.
