The Cardiac Sonographer is responsible for daily operations of the echo lab, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality improvement. The sonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the anatomy and pathology. The sonographer is proficient in performing simple and complex echocardiograms, not limited to other emergency or Cardiologist assisted procedures (i.e. pericardiocentesis, ect) pediatric echocardiograms, stress echo, and Transesophageal. The sonographer should have knowledge in diagnostic digital images and hemodynamic data for physician interpretation. Work closely with Cardiologist to obtain optimal echocardiography quality. Essential Functions • Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic cardiac examinations. • Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images • Uses independent judgment during the exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings. • Coordinates work schedule with Departmental Coordinator to assure workload coverage. • Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer’s care. • Maintains ultrasound equipment and work area and maintains adequate supplies. • Participates in ICAEL accreditation. • Establishes and maintains ethical working relationships and good rapport with all interrelating clinic sites. • Performs echocardiographic examinations procedures. Utilizes appropriate scan techniques and knobology to optimize examination. Uses cardiac imaging modalities such as M-mode, twodimensional, Doppler, Color Doppler, transesophageal and stress echocardiograms. • Notifies Cardiologist with the following diseases: Aortic Dissection, Tamponade, Endocarditis, Pulmonary Hypertension or any life threatening pathology. • Obtains pertinent clinical information from the patients, and patient’s record, to apply the necessary sonographic techniques to obtain comprehensive and diagnostic echocardiographic information. • Operates computer data acquisition of the echocardiographic study to produce a computerized report. Selects correct images for acquisition and stores appropriately in the database. • Performs quantitative analysis of the echocardiographic study to produce a report. Generates a preliminary echo report containing basic descriptive and quantitative data in defined formats. Ensures that information is properly entered on all echocardiography records. • Works closely with medical staff to guarantee optimal echocardiography quality. Provides quality care by adhering to departmental policies, procedures and safety, environmental and infection control guidelines. • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. • Addresses problems of patient care as they arise and make decisions to appropriately resolve the problems. • Reports equipment failures to the appropriate supervisor or staff member. Graduate from a formal Cardiovascular Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

1. Education: Associates degree or equivalent from a two year or technical school or six months to one-year related experience and or training or equivalent combination of education and experience 2. Licensure / Certifications: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), CPR/BLS certified 3.
