Responsibilities:
Essential Functions • Patient Care: Perform and document necessary preliminary exam needs on patient to include: height, weight, pulse, blood pressure, and temperature. Ensure patient chart is complete. Interview patient to identify current medical needs and relevant patient history. Assist with examinations, treatments, special tests and procedures within scope of practice. Administer medication as ordered by the clinician. • Clinical Lab Duties: Specimen collection and Testing Analysis: Performs venipuncture, skin puncture, and lab procedures with attention to accuracy by checking patient ID and DOB. The team member understands and follows HIPAA guidelines and ensures the confidentiality of patient results. Reporting results: Ensures all test results, in-house and referred, are reported to the clinician by checking a manifest or providing oversight of pending labs. The team member documents or assists in documentation or corrective action needed for Quality assessment, Proficiency Testing and Quality Control. Documentation: Ensures all routine, daily, monthly, and annual maintenance and QC are performed, documented and kept for the appropriate number of years. • Immunization Administration: Ability to administer immunization, as ordered, using appropriate site. Ability to review immunization record and identify potential risk and side effects of immunization (s) ordered. • Data Collection/Referrals: Code nursing visits, lab requests and procedures for billing. Verify and update patient data. Collect data from patient/family to ensure accuracy in EMR. • Clerical Duties: Assists with registration, scheduling and check-out as indicated. Greets and welcomes patient. Verifies and corrects patient demographics and updates medical insurance or payment sources. Collects and enters co-payments. Supports other duties related to front desk and scheduling. Demonstrates the Novant Health service standards with each patient encounter and delivers remarkable customer service. • Patient Education: Reinforce patient education under the direction of the clinician. Identify risk factors and chronic health problems. Report individual data to patient. Reinforces clinician education regarding patient/family self-care management. • Teamwork and Communication: Work within a team to achieve patient and team goals. Share and initiate regular and professional communication with co-workers. Facilitate and/or participate in regular team member meetings. Works within the team to identify areas of improvement and actively participates in the improvement process. • On-going Competency: Demonstrates continual competence in clinical duties and responsibilities through annual review and completion of UAP agreement with clinician, annual mandatory education (AME), annual skills assessment, maintenance of basic life support, and other mandatory clinical training as indicated. Complete necessary continuing education as required by registry or certifying body in accordance to policy NH-HR-3095. • Human Experience: Show courage through creating and sharing innovative ideas to improve the experience for both patients and peers. Round on patients to create meaningful connections and keep patients informed of visit details (delays/wait times). Model the experience principles through consistently engaging in Always Event behaviors and viewing feedback through the patient lens. Recognize and value the unique differences and similarities in both our team members and patients to create an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated. Explain all processes to patients in plain language and utilize teach back to ensure understanding. Model our people credo through a passion to care for each other, our patients and our communities. • This job role could have occasional exposure to radiation depending on the clinic – such as bariatrics, Orthopaedics, podiatry/foot & ankle, neurosciences (spine specialists). Education: High School or GED Required. Must be a graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant Program that includes an externship in a clinical setting; Medical Assistant curriculum must include pharmacology and medication administration. A fully online medical assistant program for the entire curriculum is not approved. Certification/registry must be obtained by the last day of the six month of hire, and education agreement signed. Certification/registry accepted: CMA with the American Associate of Medical Assistants (AAMA), CCMA with the National Health Career Association (NHA), RMA with the American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Registry of Medical Assistants (NHCWA), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) and RMA with the American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA). Alternative Work Experience (for eligibility to take NHA, ARMA, NHCWA, NCCT, NAHP or AMT exams, if not already certified or registered on hire): Applicant shall be employed as a supervised medical assistant for a minimum of one (1) year (NHA or NHCWA) within the last three (3) years, for a minimum of 2 years (NCCT, NAHP), for a minimum of 3 years (ARMA), for a minimum of 5 years (AMT) of the last 7 years (with no more than 2 of those years as an instructor in a post-secondary medical assistant program). Or graduate of an Accredited School of Professional Nursing. Experience must include both clinical (including medication administration) and administrative duties. Experience: Previous work in a medical office preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy NH-HR-3096.
