The Lactation Consultant works under the direction of the Manager and Lactation Coordinator and is responsible for lactation education and assistance. This includes but is not limited to breastfeeding classes, one-to-one lactation assistance, telephone breastfeeding advice and triage to additional resources. The Lactation Consultant acts as a breastfeeding resource to advocate for the obstetrical, neonatal and pediatric services, patients, healthcare teams, and communities.
Responsibilities:
1.Actively promotes breastfeeding and assists mothers in reaching their own goals for breastfeeding a.Develops and implements standards of care and guidelines for assisting breastfeeding mothers in all areas of the organization where they might be served 2.Assesses and evaluates breastfeeding effectiveness of Mother/Baby dyads in the NICU and on Mother Baby Unit while valuing Family Centered Care concepts and reflecting them in interaction with others. - Documents effectively and in a timely manner, allowing for continuity of care with co-workers.
- Functions effectively with fluctuating patient census, can prioritize and manage day to day work.
- Provides a breastfeeding plan for discharge.
- Using extensive breastfeeding knowledge; advises and recommends standards of care regarding management of breastfeeding problems.
- Identifies common breastfeeding problems and suggests appropriate interventions or referral (phone calls and outpatient consultation). Makes appropriate decisions regarding various breastfeeding devices as needed.
- Consults independently in inpatient setting, providing appropriate assessment, and intervention and follow up plan.
- Serves as a resource to professionals both within the system and in the region.
- Problem solves effectively with system staff dealing with day to day common patient care issues.
- Contributes to facilitating staff competency related to breastfeeding.
- Plans, oversees and coordinates patient, family and staff breastfeeding education activities.
- Provides and coordinates didactic education to all patients who require breastfeeding information in accordance with current research literature and national standards of care.
- Develops or obtains suitable educational materials to facilitate patient understanding of content.
- Knowledgeable and skilled in the physiology and management of breastfeeding.
- Assess patient and family emotional, cognitive, social and motivational status relative to learning and determines their education needs and priorities.
- Documents patient/family education and progress of the mother and baby in accordance with hospital standards.
- Expands and maintains knowledge of field and skills through continuous study and research.
- Maintains competency in the field by attending professional conferences and continuing education courses related to field.
- Serves as a resource to Volunteer Peer Counselors
- Assess Peer Counselors ability to provide non-biased, evidenced based education to breastfeeding families
- Support Peer Counselors in clinical setting when job duties extend beyond PC competency.

Education: High school graduate or equivalent required. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college preferred. Two years of current lactation education required. Certification/Licensure: BLS certification required. Certificate of completion from an approved Lactation educator program. Lactation Counselor certification required with a minimum of 500 documented lactation support hours or IBCLC Certification (International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners).If not IBCLC upon hire, must be certified by IBLC Examiners within 2 years of employment. RN preferred. Experience: Prior in-hospital lactation assistance experience preferred. Bilingual preferred. Excellent customer service skills. Demonstrates standards of performance (ownership, teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence. Performs other duties as assigned. Individual will possess commensurate combination of education, experience and qualifications.
