The Simulation Educator works as part of a team to develop and implement simulation-based education designed to enhance patient safety and quality in health care delivery. The main focus of the Simulation Educator is assisting in the integration of simulation-based educational activities into internal and external curriculums. This position will also be responsible for coordination of a number of key programs delivered by Novant, development of educational programs, teaching, coordination, and administrative tasks related to courses, workshops, and other events, as well as clinical session preparation and break-down, operation of simulators and taking the role of faculty actor in immersive simulation training sessions. The Simulation Educator will work collaboratively with and support UME, GME, Nursing, and Emergency Service Directors.
Responsibilities:
The Simulation Educator will be responsible for the operation of low, medium, and high-fidelity technology, instruction on use, and evaluation that supports the use of simulation by medical education programs, nursing education programs, and other healthcare personnel within the hospital. This position is to work collaboratively with simulation faculty to develop scenarios using best practice, to educate using simulation pedagogy and facilitate continuing education. This position will be able to facilitate debriefing of simulation experiences by promoting participant reflective thinking, providing constructive feedback of the participant's performance, and promote transfer of learning to the clinical setting. The Simulation Educator will coordinate the incorporation of simulation into curricula through a variety of interprofessional programs that support Novant and external agency outcomes. The Simulation Educator will answer student and faculty questions, assist students and faculty with simulation programs and assist faculty in preparation for simulation experiences. 1. In concert with the UME, GME, Nursing, and Emergency Services educators, plans and implements special projects 2. Collaboratively develops and implements high quality learning and assessment scenarios in order to meet participant and resident accreditation standards and needs 3. Identifies resources necessary for successful simulation-based educational scenarios 4. Coordinate the scheduling of simulation programs among users by working in concert with UME, GME, Nursing, and Emergency Services. 5. Support Search for simulation space and development of simulation center. 6. Promote interest in the development of a Simulation Center for medical simulation training, task training, and American Heart Association training services to local external healthcare organizations 7. Organize, plan, and maintain the placement of equipment and supplies in storerooms 8. Anticipate the equipment needs for training, marketing, and simulation 9. As directed by GME Director, provide information sessions and demonstrations for professional simulation associations and local agencies 10. Train simulation users in simulation activities and the operation of patient simulators 11. Continuously updates and refines simulation experiences based on identified needs and to serve as a resource for faculty utilizing simulation in classroom/simulation center activities 12. Monitors and assures appropriate standards of simulation center cleanliness, and notifies the GME Director of needed equipment maintenance, repair, and replacement 13. Support Simulation Instructor development 14. Knowledge of the use of different simulator technologies ranging from partial task trainers to high fidelity patient simulators to virtual reality simulators 15. Skills in providing faculty instructors with instructional tools and technical or administrative support to carry out simulation sessions. This includes setting up the simulator, the rooms, and appropriate audio‐video components for each session, and preparing educational material for the activity as directed 16. Ability to identify and implement opportunities for improvement and innovation in the Simulation Center 17. Must demonstrate outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and judgement to actively encourage cohesiveness within the inter-professional team. Must demonstrate confidentiality and sensitivity towards individuals exposed to potentially high stress situations in the learning environment and recognizing privacy and confidentiality issues. 1. Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, or healthcare related field, OR Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) required. 2. Licensure/Certifications: Valid driver’s license required. ACLS, BLS and PALS Instructor certification required or required to obtain within 1 year of hire. 3. Experience: 3 years experience in a student-centric and hands-on learning environment required, clinical experience preferred. 4. Experience with communication, interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills, planning, deployment and evaluation, and presentation and group facilitation required. 5. Ability to handle crisis situations in simulation Experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), multiple computer platforms, software applications and audio/visual methods for recording and editing required.
